Madison Bumgarner was cruising through five innings in his Arizona Diamondbacks debut Friday night. Then the wheels fell off in the sixth inning.
After pitching five shutout innings, Bumgarner gave up a three-run double to San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer on pitch No. 100 of the night.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo immediately pulled the former Giants ace, but the damage had been done.
Bumgarner allowed four hits and three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched. He walked three, struck out four and was credited with the loss.

While Bumgarner pitched well over the first five innings, his velocity was below where he normally sits. These aren't the numbers the Diamondbacks want to see after signing Bumgarner to a five-year, $85 million contract this offseason.
Typically after a game, win or lose, the starting pitcher speaks to the media. But after the Diamondbacks lost 7-2 to the Padres, Bumgarner didn't talk to reporters.

Bumgarner's next chance to pick up his first win with Arizona likely will come against the Texas Rangers next week.
