Derek Holland posts heartfelt thank you to Giants after being DFA'd

Derek Holland called signing with the Giants a "dream come true" in March 2018. That dream came to an end Sunday when San Francisco designated the veteran left-hander for assignment.

While the news surely was sad and might have come as a bit of a shock to the 32-year-old, Holland shows his gratitude Monday with a lengthy post on Instagram.

Holland said it was an "honor" to play for manager Bruce Bochy and wished his teammates nothing but the best. He thanked his coaches, teammates, trainers and fans.

Holland defied expectations in 2018 in his first year playing under Bochy. The season before being signed by San Francisco, he went 7-14 with a 6.20 ERA. In his first year with the Giants, Holland posted a 3.57 ERA over 171 innings pitched.

The Giants re-signed Holland this offseason to a one-year, $7 million deal with a 2020 team option. But the results weren't the same. Not even close.

Holland criticized the Giants when he was demoted to the bullpen earlier this season and was 2-4 with a 5.90 ERA this year when he was DFA'd.

Now that he's free to sign with any club, don't expect Holland to last too long on the open market.
