Burriss runs his way out of the record books

BOX SCORE

MIAMIEmmanuel Burriss didnt race himself into the recordbooks on Saturday. Quite the opposite, in fact.

When Burriss hustled for a double in the second inning, itwas his first extra-base hit since June 28 of last season. He had gone 149at-bats without a double, triple or home runmatching the San Francisco-erarecord for a non-pitcher set by Brett Butler in 1990. (Butler led the NL inhits that season, by the way.)

Burriss hustled again to score the tying run on Gregor Blancossingle in an eventual 5-3 loss to the Miami Marlins.
BAGGARLY: Stanton, Marlins make fish foot of tired Giants

He didnt know where he stood in regards to Butler. But heknew his slugging percentage matched his average. And thats never a goodthing.

I was aware, he said, soberly. Im playing, you know? What can you say? Im trying to put a ball in play. Extra bases will come. Hitswill come. Im not swinging the bat great to begin with, but itll be there.

Now Burriss has a .208 average and a .218 sluggingpercentage.

Even if Burriss had stopped at first base to pass Butler,he had further to go to set the all-time franchise record, at least going backto 1920 when data is available.

Jo-Jo Moore holds the Giants all-time mark when he strungtogether 176 at-bats without an extra-base hit in 1932-33.
