Brian Sabean: Tyler Beede will be with Giants ‘before we blink our eye'

Tyler Beede is competing for the Giants' fifth spot in the starting rotation.

According to Baseball America, he is the 89th ranked prospect.

"To me personally who set eyes on Beede three times last year -- three different starts -- and what he's done here in the offseason to get ready, how he's throwing the ball in the bullpen, the early talk of the pitching coaches here -- this guy is gonna be in the big leagues before we blink our eye," Brian Sabean, executive vice president of baseball operations, said on KNBR 680 on Friday morning.

The Blue Jays selected Beede with the 21st pick in the 2011 draft, but he opted to attend Vanderbilt instead.

The Giants then took Beede 14th overall in 2014.

Over 24 starts at Double-A Richmond last season, Beede went 8-7 with a 2.81 ERA.

He struck out 135 over 147.1 innings.

"Trust me, as we all kind of put our own heads together internally and evaluate everybody's prospects -- we don't necessarily do a Top 100 like these periodicals or the talking heads to -- but he's the furthest thing from the 89th prospect in baseball," Sabean said.

"He's much higher than that."

Beede, who is listed at 6'3" and 210 pounds, will turn 24 years old in May.
