Bochy compares Cabrera to one of best hitters ever

SAN FRANCISCO -- Melky Cabrera entered the day the hottest hitter on the planet. How else do you describe his 46 hits in May, which were tied for the fourth-most in a single month by a Giants player since the team moved to San Francisco in 1958?Give manager Bruce Bochy a shot at it, then."I know it's only two months in," Bochy said, "but he reminds me of a great player I played with and managed in Tony Gwynn. It's been fun to watch this guy."Cabrera singled in the fifth inning of the Giants' 4-2 defeat of Arizona to give him 47 hits in 27 May games, tying him with Orlando Cepeda for most hits in a month since 1958.Cabrera trails only Randy Winn, who had 51 hits in September of 2005, and Willie Mays, who had 49 hits in May of 1958.Buster Posey was given the day off after a busy stretch."With him catching all four (games) in Florida, this is the best thing for him. He'll catch the next two (games)."His replacement against the Diamondbacks, Hector Sanchez, threw out Chris Young trying to steal second base in the second inning.Pablo Sandoval, who has been on the disabled list since May 3 and has undergone surgery on his left hamate bone, was taking grounders before the game. He went to Arizona during the Giants' recent road trip to Milwaukee and Miami for baseball-related activity.Bochy said there is no clear timetable on his return, though he hopes it is within the next two weeks. Still, Bochy acknowledged Sandoval would have to complete a rehab assignment before rejoining the Giants.Zito's record improved to 31-3 when he receives at least four runs of support. To commemorate Memorial Day, the Giants wore black caps with the "SF" logo in camouflage.
