Giants outfielder/DH Hunter Pence hit 18 home runs for the Texas Rangers last season. He was named to his third All-Star Game and was an AL Comeback Player of the Year finalist. And he'll make less money than Bobby Bonilla this season.
The same Bobby Bonilla who is 57 years old and hasn't played a game since 2001.
San Francisco signed Pence to a one-year, $3 million contract on Feb. 7. But because of MLB's 60-game season and prorated contracts this year, Pence actually will make just $1,110,000. That somehow is less than what Bonilla makes every year on July 1 until 2035, when he'll be 72.

Here's how it works. In 2000, the New York Mets agreed to buy out the rest of Bonilla's $5.9 million at the time. But there's a catch. The Mets agreed to make annual payments of $1,193,248.20 for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8 percent interest.
Due to prorated salaries this season, any player making less than $3.225 million in full-season salary will receive less than Bonilla this year. To get a player's prorated salary, you have to multiply their full-season salary by 0.3703703704. That brings us to the Giants.

Only eight players -- Buster Posey, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, Evan Longoria, Kevin Gausman and Drew Smyly -- will make more than Bonilla this season. Key players to the Giants' success like Mike Yastrzemski, Mauricio Dubon, Alex Dickerson and Tony Watson will make less than Barry Bonds' former teammate with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Bobby Bonilla Day is one to celebrate in the Bonilla household and not many other places. That's especially true for the Mets, and most of the Giants' roster this year.
