The A's will be shorthanded Thursday afternoon when they look to secure a series win over the lowly Kansas City Royals.
Khris Davis went on paternity leave prior to Wednesday's game, and third baseman Matt Chapman was hit in the helmet by a Jakob Junis pitch during the Royals' 6-4 win at Kauffman Stadium. Chapman initially stayed in the game, but he eventually exited. He is not in the lineup for Thursday's matinee finale, although manager Bob Melvin told the media it was a planned day off for the slugger. Chapman luckily did not suffer a concussion.
With Davis and Chapman both out, Jurickson Profar will get the nod at designated hitter while Chad Pinder mans the hot corner.

The A's will send right-hander Chris Bassitt to the mound. He will be opposed by Royals right-hander Glenn Sparkman.
