OAKLAND – The Oakland A’s placed third baseman Matt Chapman on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to yesterday with a right thumb contusion, the club announced Saturday.  The A’s also recalled right-handed pitcher Josh Lucas and infielder Franklin Barreto from Triple-A Nashville and optioned right-handed pitcher Carlos Ramirez to Nashville.

Chapman was batting .250 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI and had played in all 69 of the A’s games prior to yesterday.  This is his second career stint on the DL as he missed time last year from June 19 to July 2 with left knee cellulitis.  Chapman played in 149 consecutive games in between the two DL stints.  He is batting .368 in June after hitting .186 in May and leads all Major League third basemen in total chances (247), putouts (54) and assists (182).

Barreto joins the A’s for the third time this year and is 0-for-6 with a walk in five games over his previous two stints.  He was recalled for the first time April 7 and played in one game without an at bat before he was optioned back to Nashville April 16.  Barreto went 0-for-6 in four games, including three starts, during his second stay with Oakland from May 23 to 31.  The 22-year-old right-handed hitter batted .238 with a home run and four RBI in 11 games with the Sounds following his most recent option and is hitting .236 with seven home runs and 21 RBI in 43 games overall at Triple-A. Barreto has appeared in 31 games at second base and nine at shortstop.

Lucas is 0-0 with a 2.89 ERA and .250 opponents batting average in four games, including one start, with Oakland and begins his fourth stint with the club today.  He was recalled most recently on May 30, pitched 0.2 scoreless innings the next day against Tampa Bay, and was optioned to Nashville June 5.  The 27-year-old right-hander pitched four times for the Sounds following his most recent option and did not allow a run in 5.1 innings.  Overall, he has three saves, a 1.50 ERA and .167 opponents batting average in 14 games at Triple-A.

Ramirez was recalled from Nashville Thursday and appeared in each of the A’s two games since then (4.0 ip, 1 h, 2 r, 2 er, 3 bb, 2 so).  He has a 3.00 ERA in three games over two stints with Oakland and a 3.24 ERA in five games overall in the majors.
