A's notes: What's next for Brett Anderson?

OAKLAND -- The A's are tasked with facing Felix Hernandez for a fourth time before the All-Star break. It is always a dubious task. The Mariners' ace is 1-1 with a 3.80 ERA vs. the A's this season, but holds a 13-5 record over the A's with a 2.70 ERA. If they beat him they will enter the All-Star break at 43-43. It is turn-back-the-clock-day at the Coliseum. The A's will be wearing the Oakland Oaks uniforms from 1955. The Mariners will be in Tacoma Rainiers uniforms. Pregame Notes:-Brett Anderson threw another bullpen session on Sunday. He is expected to pitch a two inning simulated game on Wednesday.
REWIND: Anderson eyes rehab assignment, Braden further behind
-Collin Cowgill participated in full baseball activities again today. He ran full speed in the outfield and on the bases. He will begin his rehabilitation assignment in Stockton on Monday. -The A's will hold a team workout in Minnesota on Thursday. A's manager Bob Melvin sees the four-day layoff as a risk for the team to get rusty. He expects the A's to settle in a little bit in the second half as the roster continues to mesh. The A's have used 43 players this year which is the second most in the American League. Seventeen of the 43 players are rookies, which is the most in used in the majors. "We have had a lot of turnover in and out as a team," Melvin said. "We are settling on a group in the second half and getting a little bit of identity." -The A's have exceeded many expectations in the first half. They are 3.5 games behind in the American League Wild Card standings. This season MLB changed the rules and two Wild Card teams will play in a one-game playoff. The A's have a chance to earn one of those spots if they continue to improve in the second half, something Melvin expects the team will do. "We expect to play better, It has been a tumultuous first half," he said. "We got through a nine-game losing streak and we are better for that. We played a lot of dramatic games whether it is walk-off wins or losses."-While all the players except Ryan Cook get an All-Star break, Melvin will be in Kansas City serving on Ron Washington's All-Star coaching staff. An opportunity that means a lot to him since he grew up an A's fan. "To be able to represent the Oakland A's in an All-Star game is pretty special for me," Melvin said. "I would never envision growing up that I would be in an All-Star game in this uniform. In that respect I am really excited about that."
