A's notes: Pomeranz weighing shoulder surgery

SEATTLE –- A team orthopedist has recommended shoulder surgery for Drew Pomeranz, but the A’s reliever will seek additional opinions before deciding whether to have it.

The procedure, a clavicle resection, typically involves a six-week recovery time. If Pomeranz decides to move forward with the procedure, it shouldn’t interfere with his readiness for spring training if the rehab goes smoothly.

Dr. Will Workman gave the initial review of Pomeranz’s MRI results.

“Drew is going to seek some other opinions and take a look, sit down and deetermine if (surgery) is something he wants to do at this stage, or see if it calms down and feels better down the road,” A’s head trainer Nick Paparesta said.

Pomeranz has irritation and “arthritic conditions” in the AC joint on top of his shoulder, Paparesta said.

“We’re not talking about a labrum repair or rotator cuff repair.”

Poole: Why Rickey was, for too short a time, the best among us

Athletics announce 17-game promotional schedule for 2025 season

Future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera is one pitcher who’s undergone a clavicle resection, having the operation in the winter of 2008 and being ready for the start of the 2009 season.

Pomeranz’s last outing of the season came on Sept. 26 against the Giants.

In other pitcher updates, A’s manager Bob Melvin said he’s optimistic that right-hander A.J. Griffin will be a full go for spring training. Griffin, who hasn’t appeared in a game since undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery in April 2014, is currently recovering from shoulder tendinitis and is not throwing. Melvin said the hope is that rest does the trick over the winter.

Jarrod Parker, who’s also missed the past two seasons after Tommy John surgery and a subsequent elbow fracture, is throwing right now. But Melvin said he believes Parker’s status for spring might be a bit more questionable right now than Griffin’s.

“The fact (Parker) is throwing now is encouraging,” Melvin said. “(But) there’s a little more uncertainty I would think with Jarrod.”
