A's first roster cuts include prospects Martin, Nunez

MESA, Ariz. – Highly touted infield prospects Richie Martin and Renato Nunez were among the A’s first round of roster cuts Sunday.

Nunez, a third baseman ranked the A’s No. 4 prospect by Baseball America, was optioned to Triple-A Nashville along with first baseman Rangel Ravelo. Right-hander Raul Alcantara was optioned to Double-A Midland.

Martin, Oakland’s first-round draft pick last June, was reassigned to minor league camp along with infielder Josh Rodriguez, reliever Daniel Coulombe and catcher Beau Taylor. Martin earned praise from manager Bob Melvin during his first exposure to Major League spring training. He’s ranked the A’s fifth-best prospect.

The A’s now have 55 players left in camp.
