ARLINGTON -- The A's got some encouraging news regarding injured starting pitcher Brett Anderson as he recovers from a right oblique strain that he suffered last Wednesday in Detroit. He has been sock throwing and he could be ready to take the next step toward recovery. "If everything goes well and he doesn't feel anything tomorrow there's a chance he could play catch," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "What that means I am not sure." Anderson won his first four starts upon returning to the rotation after a 14-month layoff after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He is 4-2 with a 2.57 ERA in six starts this year. If he can return in time for the A's potential postseason run it would be a huge boost to the team. "I don't want to get too optimistic and again we have a lot of work to do to get to a potential place where he could pitch again," Melvin said. Melvin acknowledged that Anderson will have a lot of work ahead of him before he can make a return, even in the best case scenario. He will still have to get on a mound and throw, and go through some bullpens.
