A’s center fielder Billy Burns finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting announced Monday.

Burns, who led AL rookies in hits, stolen bases and multi-hit games, garnered one second-place vote and three third-place votes to total six points. Astros shortstop Carlos Correa (124 points) beat out Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor (109) for the award, as those two dominated in votes that were cast at the end of the regular season by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Twins designated hitter Miguel Sano (20 points) finished third and Blue Jays reliever Roberto Osuna (8 points) was fourth.

Burns, 26, appeared ticketed for Triple-A Nashville when he arrived at spring training. But after a very impressive camp, he made the Opening Night roster. After a brief stint in the minors, he came back up and commanded the everyday center field job, and his speed on the bases and highlight-reel catches made him the A’s most electrifying player.

Burns led Oakland in batting (.294), runs (70), hits (153), steals (26) and triples (9). That batting average is second-best in Oakland history among rookies, behind Mitchell Paige’s .307 mark in 1977.

Correa hit .279 with 22 homers and 68 RBI and was a driving force behind the Astros’ run to a Wild Card berth despite not being called up to the majors until June. He received 17 first-place votes with Lindor getting the other 13.
