A’s ace Sonny Gray was named one of three finalists Tuesday for the 2015 American League Cy Young award, along with the Houston Astros’ Dallas Keuchel and the Toronto Blue Jays’ David Price.
It caps a 2015 season in which Gray made his first All-Star team and continued to cement his status as one of the majors’ top starting pitchers. The 26-year-old right-hander went 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA, third lowest in the league. He tied for the AL lead with two shutouts, tied for second with a .217 opponents’ batting average and tied for fifth in WHIP at 1.08.
Keuchel (20-8, 2.48) and Price (18-5, 2.45) are considered the heavy co-favorites for the Cy Young, which is voted on by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. The winner will be announced Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. (PT) on the MLB Network. Regardless, being recognized as one of the league’s top three pitchers is a big feather in the cap for Gray, who just completed his second full season in the majors.
